#Hashtag Marketing

Updated: Feb 24, 2019

We have all seen hashtags on social media but what do they really do? How do you use them in your marketing mix? A hashtag is an indexing tool that links your message to a larger audience and can raise your brand awareness. Below are a few tips to help you get started:

  1. Research Hashtags- before you use a hashtag in your message, drop it in the search box of your favorite social media platform or use a hashtag analytic tool. Is the information a good match for your product or service? Is there any content that may turn off a potential customer? Is the hashtag too large of an index (too many post)?

  2. Use Branded Hashtags- use your brand name as a unique hashtag and make sure to include this in every message and on all marketing material. Also think about capturing a little bit of the magic of another's branded hashtag. For example, February is American Heart Month and many in the health field will use its campaign hashtag (#HeartHealthy) to gain exposure to the larger audience.

  3. Listen and Be Active- build your content around the current conversation/issues and directly respond to users that are talking about your brand. For example, in the middle of a blizzard Dunkin Donuts used trending hashtags related o the blizzard and even retweeted a fan's post with a picture of the customer holding a cup of DD coffee saying "nothing will stop Dan from getting his @DunkinDonuts."

It pays to use hashtags as part of your marketing mix but make sure you are getting the most out of using them. Do your research, be consistent with your branded hashtag, use the reach of others and be engaged in the conversation. Time to put those #Hashtags to work to market your brand!
